The first document attesting to the presence of the Knights of St. John in the city is a <\/span>will dated 1144<\/b><\/span>. As early as 1180, the Order had a seat in Venice with the status of a \u201cPriory\u201d dedicated to Saint Egidio, to which the estates scattered throughout the Northeast were subordinate.<\/span>\n\nAlthough in the famous <\/span>Venetian map engraved by Jacopo de\u2019 Barbari in 1500<\/b><\/span> the location is identified by the name <\/span>\u201cdel Tempio\u201d<\/b><\/span>, the current seat of the Grand Priory has never belonged to the Order of the Templars.<\/span>\n\nFollowing the Napoleonic decree of April 30, 1806 <\/span>the Order was subsequently stripped of all its assets<\/b><\/span>, which were transferred to the state or sold to private individuals. The only exceptions were the church, the palace, and the adjoining garden, which were returned to the Order by Emperor Ferdinand I in 1841. In this case, however, the coat of arms records are separate from the genealogical chart. <\/span> <\/b>In fact, this complete copy, with its four quarters and illuminated coats of arms, is preserved in Rome at the Magistral Library.<\/span>\n\nAlso on display will be the <\/span>\u201cReceipt records for Mag.co Don Flaminio, son of the Marquises Don Fabrizio Crivelli and Donna Barbara Simonetti\u201d<\/b><\/span>, a document <\/span>from Milan dated 1729<\/span><\/span>, concerning two of the most prominent families of the Milanese aristocracy, along with the <\/span>\u201cProofs of Nobility of Alviero Zacco\u201d<\/b><\/span>\u201d. The first document attesting to the presence of the Knights of St. John in the city is a <\/span>will dated 1144<\/b><\/span>. As early as 1180, the Order had a seat in Venice with the status of a \u201cPriory\u201d dedicated to Saint Egidio, to which the estates scattered throughout the Northeast were subordinate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although in the famous <\/span>Venetian map engraved by Jacopo de\u2019 Barbari in 1500<\/b><\/span> the location is identified by the name <\/span>\u201cdel Tempio\u201d<\/b><\/span>, the current seat of the Grand Priory has never belonged to the Order of the Templars.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the Napoleonic decree of April 30, 1806 <\/span>the Order was subsequently stripped of all its assets<\/b><\/span>, which were transferred to the state or sold to private individuals. The only exceptions were the church, the palace, and the adjoining garden, which were returned to the Order by Emperor Ferdinand I in 1841. Among the most interesting pieces in the exhibition\u2014selected from the archives for this occasion by the Chancellor\u2014is an example of <\/span>cabreo<\/b><\/span>\u2014that is, <\/span>a detailed inventory of the Grand Priory\u2019s assets<\/b><\/span>, which served to record its assets and demonstrate sound administration to the Receivers of the Public Treasury.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other documents on display date back to the first two decades of the 18th century and come from the <\/span>\u201cCavalieri di Giustizia\u201d collection, which consists of coat-of-arms certificates and genealogical banners<\/b><\/span> that were presented during the <\/span>noble trials required for admission to the Order<\/b><\/span>, with the aim of proving the candidate\u2019s lineage and the nobility of his four ancestors.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a typical record of the Order, of extraordinary historical interest and great archival value, given that <\/span>the noble trials compile documents drawn from various sources<\/b><\/span>, such as <\/span>parish, notarial, and municipal archives<\/b><\/span>, which have been scattered over the centuries, to the extent that the Venetian collection preserves <\/span>the only surviving copy of originals that have since been destroyed<\/b><\/span>. <\/span> <\/p>\n

Furthermore, these tests, <\/span>thanks to the <\/span>the dense networks of inter-family relationships<\/b><\/span> that emerge, allow scholars to better understand the social dynamics that shaped the various territorial areas under the jurisdiction of the ancient Priory of Venice. <\/span> <\/p>\n

Furthermore, these manuscripts <\/span>were not merely bureaucratic tools<\/b><\/span>; the <\/span>quality of the colors and calligraphy<\/b><\/span> in fact demonstrate that they were considered <\/span>true objects of prestige<\/b><\/span>, intended to highlight the social status of the suitor and his ancestors. <\/span> <\/p>\n

Also on display are the \u201c<\/span>\u201cTwo Quartos by the Noble Gaetano Bandinelli of Siena\u201d <\/b><\/span>from 1728<\/span>.<\/b><\/span> The file preserved in Venice concerns the maternal lineage, that is, the mother\u2019s family. In this case, however, the coat of arms records are separate from the genealogical chart. <\/span> <\/b>In fact, this complete copy, with its four quarters and illuminated coats of arms, is preserved in Rome at the Magistral Library.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also on display will be the <\/span>\u201cReceipt records for Mag.co Don Flaminio, son of the Marquises Don Fabrizio Crivelli and Donna Barbara Simonetti\u201d<\/b><\/span>, a document <\/span>from Milan dated 1729<\/span><\/span>, concerning two of the most prominent families of the Milanese aristocracy, along with the <\/span>\u201cProofs of Nobility of Alviero Zacco\u201d<\/b><\/span>\u201d.
