To take the vast and rich human heritage\u2014composed of the experiences, stories, and hopes of the elderly\u2014and transform it into a work of art and a testimony. For the past few days in the <\/span><\/span>Cloister of the San Giobbe Service Center<\/b><\/span><\/span> The following was inaugurated in Venice: <\/span><\/span>“Promemoria” Exhibition<\/b><\/span><\/span> with images taken from the <\/span><\/span>a special project combining research, pedagogy, and creative work, conceived and directed by the renowned director and playwright Davide Iodice<\/b><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>The initiative, <\/span><\/span>Born out of a long process of engagement and collaboration with the residents of the S. Giobbe Nursing Home, this project was made possible thanks to our partnership with I.P.A.V.<\/span><\/span> <\/b><\/span><\/span>(Venetian Public Care Institutions)<\/b><\/span><\/span> and to those who support, assist, and care for the elderly every day. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

A project that was initially conceived for the<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>54th International Theater Festival<\/span><\/span> <\/b><\/span><\/span>of the Venice Biennale,<\/b><\/span><\/span> directed by <\/span><\/span>Willem Dafoe<\/b><\/span><\/span>, which concluded with a performance held right there at the nursing home, featuring both residents and staff. The initiative is now, behind the scenes, thanks to <\/span><\/span>at the Historical Archives of the Venice Biennale – International Center for Research on Contemporary Arts<\/b><\/span><\/span> It has become a photography exhibition, featuring <\/span><\/span>75 <\/b><\/span><\/span>photo by Andrea Avezzu<\/b><\/span> and a series of <\/span>Images by Carlotta Vinanti<\/b><\/span>, c<\/span>that will be visible to the public <\/span><\/span>through November 6<\/b><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And there are many of them here. Theater, in fact, is not just the technical production of a show, but it is <\/span> a process that fosters relationships<\/b><\/span>.\u201d <\/span> \n\nIodice found so much humanity at the San Giobbe Nursing Home: \u201c<\/span>We encountered faces that form an emotional landscape of stories, jobs, and emotions<\/b><\/span>i. \u201cThey are a map of all the possibilities a person can experience in life,\u201d he says. \u201cIn these places, you find a beautiful humanity. \u201cThe performance simply consisted of taking what had happened naturally to an even higher level of intensity,\u201d explained Iodice. <\/span><\/p>\n

“We really enjoyed the workshop, <\/span><\/span>we were able to share our life experiences,<\/b><\/span><\/span>,\u201d say <\/span><\/span>Susanna and Rosanna,<\/b><\/span><\/span> guests at the house. Among them was also <\/span><\/span>Romulus<\/b><\/span><\/span>, at the time <\/span><\/span>a union leader for the gondoliers, who recalled the political ideas that inspired him.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the traveling performance throughout the shelter, Ms. <\/span><\/span>Alberta<\/b><\/span><\/span>\u2014who had sold her house to move into the nursing home\u2014baked bread and <\/span><\/span>talked about the bakery her family used to run in La Maddalena. <\/b><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. <\/span><\/span>Guglielmo<\/b><\/span> , on the other hand, who recited Ugo Foscolo\u2019s \u201cA Zacinto\u201d from memory, <\/span>accompanied by <\/span>Maria Stella from the artistic team<\/span> with whom he was in dialogue, <\/span>recalled his time in America and London<\/span>, sharing with her, sixty years later, <\/span>a life journey that was almost identical<\/span>.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In total, there were <\/span>35 seniors participated in the workshops, and 19 of them went on to take part in the performance<\/b><\/span>, as some had passed away in the meantime. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPromemoria\u201d is so named because during the workshops, the seniors were asked <\/span>what remains when memory fades<\/b><\/span>: \u201cAt the core of it all, feelings and ideas remain.\u201d <\/span> <\/p>\n

A project <\/span>to combat the sense of loneliness and abandonment <\/b><\/span>that some residents may feel\u2014in a place where, however, according to Iodice, <\/span>there is more life than one might imagine<\/b><\/span>: \u201cIt was a community effort; we chose this IPAV because of the exceptional work the educators do there.\u201d <\/span> <\/p>\n

An incredible journey that transformed me and <\/span>reminded me of what theater means to me<\/b><\/span>, that is, the vital connection with people\u2014with the experts on life. And there are many of them here. Theater, in fact, is not just the technical production of a show, but it is <\/span> a process that fosters relationships<\/b><\/span>.\u201d <\/span> <\/p>\n

Iodice found so much humanity at the San Giobbe Nursing Home: \u201c<\/span>We encountered faces that form an emotional landscape of stories, jobs, and emotions<\/b><\/span>i. \u201cThey are a map of all the possibilities a person can experience in life,\u201d he says. \u201cIn these places, you find a beautiful humanity.
